Waynesville, Stephen Alan "Wrong Way" Whittaker, age 53, of 315 Lightning Bug Lane, passed away on Thursday, March 25 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Born in Pinellas County, Florida, he resided in Hapeville, Georgia before moving to Haywood County in 2004. He was the son of the late Philip A. and Verona D. Sutton Whittaker and was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Hazel Turpen and brother-in-law, Travis Turpen. Steve worked as a mechanic at Ghost Town and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and hunting. He also loved photography and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sandra Whittaker; three daughters, Anna Price and her husband, Danny, of Whittier, North Carolina and Jesse Spence and her husband, James, and Christine White, all of Leesburg, Florida his aunt, Zephy Messer, of Waynesville; two brother-in-laws and their wives, Silas and Kristi Turpen of Carrollton, Georgia, Ronnie and Judy Manley of Dawsonville, Georgia, two sister-in-laws, Florence Turpen of Gainesville, Georgia and Tamsey Fields and her husband, Gerald, of Leesburg, Florida; three grandchildren, Haley and Katie Price and Destiny Spence; three nephews, Christopher Turpen, and Joseph and Timothy Prichette; and one niece, Bethany Turpen;. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Scott Easler officiating. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
