Waynesville, Sue Ann Morgan, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, March 01, 2017 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Miami, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Valeria Willis Morgan. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Patty Lou Morgan Knapik; two nephews, Scott and Todd Hooper. Sue graduated from University of Miami with a BSN in Nursing and received her MBA from Western Carolina University. She was employed by Haywood County Hospital from 1962 until 1981, at which time she served as head nurse for the medical floor and house supervisor. She had the opportunity to be the first nurse to learn electrocardiograms and to transmit them to a major medical center. She was mentored by Dr. Ralph Feichter and helped open the first coronary care unit in Western North Carolina. She was part of the orientation team that was responsible for transfer of patients from the old to the new Haywood County Hospital in 1979. In 1981 she became employed by the State of North Carolina in the College System. She became the nursing director of the Region A nursing consortium and had graduated over 500 persons. Sue retired from the consortium in 1996. Sue was active in several organizations at the state and regional levels and was a member of the advisory board for the BSN program with Western Carolina University. A part-time patient educator for Heart Path at Mission Hospital while working with the consortium. Sue is survived by a sister, Rosemary Hooper, and her husband, Vaughn, of Donaldsonville, Georgia; three nieces, Wanda Knapik Vernon, and her husband, Scott, of Lake Wylie, South Carolina; Shirley Knapik Sawyer, and her husband, Jimmy, and Michelle Knapik, all of Waynesville; one nephew, Bill Knapik, Jr., of Knoxville, Tennessee; a brother-in-law, Bill Knapik, Sr., and his wife, Deby, of Waynesville; a special friend and partner, Cynthia Bowen, of Waynesville; several great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
