Susan Joyce Brown

Susan Joyce Brown, born on November 17, 1958, in Clyde, NC, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024. She lived her entire life in Clyde, surrounded by family, friends, and the rich heritage of her ancestors.

A dedicated public servant, Susan earned her degree from Western Carolina University and went on to obtain a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. For 20 years, she worked with the NC Department of Vocational Rehabilitation Services in Jackson County, where her compassion and commitment to assisting the students in Western North Carolina and the disabled made a lasting impact on the community.

Susan's passion for service continued at Grandview Manor Care Center in Franklin, where she devoted 11 years to caring for both residents and staff, forging deep connections that enriched her life. In addition to her professional endeavors, she had a profound love for genealogy, dedicating herself to researching family histories and preserving legacies. Her expertise led her to serve as Registrar of the Hugh Rogers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a descendant of the Mayflower patriot, Thomas Rogers.

She is preceded in glory by her parents, Bruce Bailey Brown and Faith Palmer Brown, as well as her brother, Brucie Brown. Susan is survived by her sister, Deborah Brown Strum and husband Melvin Charles Strum of Franklin, along with her two nephews, Charles Bruce Strum and wife Julie Daniel Strum of Texas, and Brian Francis Strum, and five great-nephews: Bailey Daniel Strum, William Kolte Strum, Addison Bruce Strum, Knox Francis Strum, and Zane Morlan Strum, as well as her Aunt Sara Queen Brown. She also leaves behind a long-term family friend Lisa Jambon and her children, who held a special place in Susan’s heart.

A special thanks is extended to the staff at Grandview Manor Care Center, who made heroic efforts to extend her life and provide her peace and comfort.

A funeral service will be held on October 27, 2024, at Wells Funeral Home in Canton, NC. Visitation will take place from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by the service at 2:00 PM. Susan will then be laid to rest at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens.
