Sybil Wilburn

July 24, 1914 — March 7, 2007

Clyde—Reverend Sybil Glenn Wilburn, age 92, of 64 Mountain Mission Road, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 8:55 p.m. at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Williamson, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Harry Glenn Wilburn and Laura Adeline Proffit Wilburn. She was a retired minister, a schoolteacher, and a member of Shelton Laurel Mountain Mission Corps. She attended Bible Study at Kentucky Mt. Holiness Association, was ordained, and worked full time doing pastorial work for 30 years. While teaching school, she pastured, and attended Morehead State University, where she received a Bachelors Degree at the age of 51 before her retirement. She then taught school in Ohio for eleven years and then retired for the second time. In 1976, Sybil got an answer from God and came to the mountains to help Major Jean Frese at Shelton Laurel Mountain Mission. Major Frese was transferred to Winston-Salem to work with the senior citizens and the Salvation Army let Sybil go along to help. She became a full time volunteer cook for the Salvation Army Senior Citizens Group for five years and was honored in Winston-Salem for most volunteer hours worked. Sybil returned to the mountains with Major Frese and worked part time at Little Creek Corps for one year before retiring for the third time. She is survived by her dear friends, Major Jean Lorraine Frese of the Fines Creek Community and Dr. Karen Lynn Hartman of Asheville. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Mountain Mission Shelton Laurel on Sunday, March 9, 2008 with Captain Minnie Harrell officiating. A luncheon will be held after the service at the mission. Inurnment was held at Redmond Cemetery in the Fines Creek Community. Memorials may be made to Shelton Laurel Mountain Mission Corps, 35 Mountain Mission Road, Clyde, NC 28721.
