Sydney Pettyjohn

December 27, 1939 — January 17, 2014

Lake Junaluska, Sydney Elizabeth Smith Pettyjohn, 74, of Lake Junaluska, NC, died, Friday, January 17, 2014. She was the wife of Walker Pettyjohn for almost 50 years. Their anniversary would be March 24, 2014. Born in Charleston, SC, she was the daughter of a United Methodist minister, the late Reverend Charlisle Smith and Nancy Harrelson Smith. Mrs. Pettyjohn was a Dramatic Arts Major at Columbia College, Columbia, SC. She later attended Leland Powers School of Television and the Arts in Boston, MA. Most importantly, she was the loving and devoted wife of a Presbyterian (USA) minister. She is survived by two sons; Jon Blair Pettyjohn and wife, Diane of Fairfax, VA; and Walker Evan Pettyjohn of Atlanta, GA.; and one granddaughter, Sarah Pettyjohn of Fairfax, VA. She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Kemp Pettyjohn, a sister, Nancy Lynn and a brother, Stephen Carlisle. Sydney lived life joyfully. Even in the face of death she knew to "give thanks to God, for God is good, and his steadfast love endures forever." She knew "death would be no more, mourning, pain and crying will be no more." Only joy will remain. She wanted all to know, "The Lord is our dwelling place, The Lord is our Home, both now and forever" and "we will dwell in the House of The Lord Forever."
