Ted Woodruff

Ted Lee Woodruff, age 85, went to Heaven on December 9, 2012 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Glen and Belva Hall Woodruff. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Tara Lee Woodruff; two sisters, Altha Mae Buchanan and Faye Woodruff; and two brothers, Charles and William Ray Woodruff. In addition to his wife of 55 years, Bonnie Smith Woodruff, he is survived by a daughter, Teresa Woodruff; a sister, VeEtta Webb (husband Leon); three grandchildren, Jake (wife Andrea), Zach, and Chelsea Hollifield; and several nieces and nephews. He retired from Champion International in 1989 after 42 years of service, where he served as an electrician and Fire Marshall. Ted was also appointed to the State Fire Commission by Governor James B. Hunt. Ted was a member of Canton First Baptist Church where he served on the House and Grounds Committee. He was former board chairman of Haywood County Department of Social Services, served as Canton Alderman for 36 years and was one of the longest serving alderman in North Carolina. He served two terms as Canton Mayor Pro Tem. He was a former board member of Champion Credit Union, a previous constable for the Beaverdam township, and a charter member of Haywood County Rescue Squad. He was an ex-officio member of Canton Recreation Commission and the Colonial Arts Center. Ted was a former member of the Pisgah Activities Committee and volunteered as the official timekeeper for the clock at Pisgah High football games for 52 years. He was a United States Navy veteran serving in Guam during World War II as a member of the Seabees. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Canton First Baptist Church with the Reverend James A. Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Pallbearers will be members of the Canton Police Department and Canton Fire Department. Memorials may be made to Canton First Baptist Church, 74 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716.
