Thelma Cabe Hawkins, age, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on December 12, 2005. Thelma was born October 17, 1917, in Candler to Bonnie Jackson Moser Cabe and Lonn M. Cabe. She was raised by her loving mother and stepfather, C.P. Smathers of Canton. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, James Paul Hawkins. She loved life, her family, church and friends and gave her all unselfishly for them. She was a lifelong member of Canton First Baptist Church where she worked in the junior department for 21 years. She taught many more years in the two to four year olds, then spent her last years in the Berean Sunday School Class. She worked at Champion Paper and Fiber Company before her daughter's birth. Then later retired from Belk's in Canton after 26 years. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Patsy Hawkins Howell of Candler; her grandson, Jeffrey Howell and his wife, Samantha and great-grandson, Jackson of Asheville; her grandson, Alan Howell and great-grandson, Donovan of Candler; her granddaughter, Jamie Fuentes and her husband, Claudio and soon to be great-granddaughter, Nadia. A service of remembrance will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2005 at Canton First Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Dr. Rick Gosnell. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville. Her family will receive friends from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the church.
