Thelma Lanning

Thelma Holland Lanning, age 102, formerly of Haywood County died Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Jesse Helms Nursing Center in Monroe, NC. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Henry and Annie Smathers Holland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lanning and her daughter, Rachel Sherlin. She and her husband, Robert, were former owners of American Cleaners. Thelma was a former employee of Myers Arnold Department Store and Ghost Town. She is survived by a son, William Carl "Bill" Mason of Wingate; a daughter, Shirley M. Wright of Canton; three step-daughters, Dorothy Lindsey of Bradenton, FL, Frankie Barstow of Glendale, AZ, and Roberta Reeves of Canton; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and four great–great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 26, 2010, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Dr. Derrill Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
