Waynesville, Thelma Sophia Medford, age 104, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Medford, who died in 1979; two daughters, Bennie Lou Francis and Betty Balentine; three sons, Otis, Edwin and Mack Medford; twin sister, Zelma Howell, and sisters, Clara Robinson and Annie Everhardt. Thelma was a peaceful, kind and compassionate woman of God and a life-long member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a talented seamstress and an excellent cook who especially enjoyed baking her famous chocolate pound cake. Thelma and her husband, Ben, once operated the Pioneer Village in Maggie Valley. Thelma is survived by a her sons, J.R. Medford of Lake Junaluska and Dewain Medford and his wife, Rosa, of Lilburn, Georgia; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2015 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Charles W. "Chuck" Wilson, II and Reverend Tim McConnell officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Long's Chapel United Methodist Church General Fund, P.O.
