Thelma Smith

Maggie Valley, Thelma Inez Ward Smith, age 95, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at The Homestead. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ora Brown Ward. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Roy Smith, who died in 1993; a son, Harold Smith; and three brothers, Harry, Joe and Vivian Ward. Thelma loved spending time with her grandchildren and also enjoyed keeping house and cooking for her family. Thelma was a member of First Baptist Church of Maggie Valley. Thelma is survived by a son, Dean Smith, and his wife, Myra, of Maggie Valley and also survived by 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Ward Home Place on Big Barn Road with Reverend Dr. Mike Odom and Reverend Jerry Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with grandsons and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood Healthcare Foundation, c/o The Homestead, 127 Sunset Ridge road, Clyde, NC 28721.
