Thelma Stamey

Lake Junaluska-Thelma Hubbard Stamey, age 94, of 754 County Road, died on Sunday, September 17, 2006 at her residence. A native of Gaston County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Sicero and Sarah Melissa Wentz Hubbard. A life-long Methodist, she was active on local, district, conference, jurisdictional, and general church levels. She served on local and district councils on ministries; was conference member of the Board of Global Ministries, the Hunger committee, Leadership Development Committee, Committee on Communications, and the Methodist Board of Publication. She was a lay member of Annual and Jurisdictional Conferences and a member of the General Commission on Communications. She served local, district, conference, and jurisdictional offices of UMW and served eight years as Director of Women's and World Divisions and the Health and Welfare Program Department of the General Board of Global Ministries. She was a current member of Waynesville District Executive Committee of UM Women and District Consultant in First UMC, Waynesville member of Administrative Board, Council on Ministries, Chair of Commission on Missions/Outreach, Mission, Coordinator of Christian Social Involvement, member of Commission on Church and Society, and the Peace Committee. She was also a member of Haywood County Peace Committee and the American Association of University Women. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Reverend Dr. Robert H. Stamey; one daughter, Melissa Stamey, of Lake Junaluska; one son, Kenneth Robert Stamey, of Waynesville; one brother, Luke Hubbard, of Belmont, NC; and two grandchildren, Lindsey Raeburn and Tyler K. Stamey. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2006 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells and Reverend Dottie Gibbs officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the annex of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786.
