Theodore James Sweger, January 19, 1924 – August 10, 2016, lived to be 92 years old. He was a combat veteran of World War II, followed by a career as a design engineer with Illinois Railway Equipment Company in Chicago. Together with his company, he was awarded more than 70 patents. In retirement, Ted volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Andean Rural Health Care and Intentional Growth Center at Lake Junaluska, and with his church. He graduated from St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago and entered the United States Army on July 4, 1943. Ted served as a mortar section leader, Staff Sergeant, K Company, 3rd Battalion, 313 Regiment, 79th Infantry Division. He was wounded inside Germany on April 9, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Good Conduct Medal by the United States Government. Ted met his wife, Jeannette May te Brake, when both were 10 years old. They were married for 71 years. Jeannette continues as a resident of Silver Bluff Village. Theodore is also survived by his daughter, Carol Lynne Sweger Ploch, and his son-in-law Richard, his granddaughter Christine Elizabeth Basulto, her husband, Armando, and their sons (great grandsons) Armand and Christian. A private graveside service will be held at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 15, 2016 at Silver Bluff Village. Theodore will be remembered for his humor and strength, interest in many hobbies, and most of all, loving care of his wife and family. He helped raise two generations of women and then his great grandsons. Ted will always be in our hearts as we try to follow his model of humility, generosity and daily study of the Bible. The family appreciates the loving care he received from everyone at Silver Bluff for the past 19 months and Hospice in recent days. Memorials may be made in his memory to Silver Bluff Village Activities Fund, 100 Silver Bluff Drive, Canton, NC 28716 or to Four Seasons Hospice, 581 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
