Waynesville-Thomas H. "Tommy" Hightower, Jr., age 70, of 115 Short Street, died Sunday, November 26, 2006 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Thomas H. Hightower, Sr. and Celia Brock H. Reid. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Hightower, who died in 1997; a daughter, Mary Lynn Hightower, who died in 1966; a stepfather George Reed; and a stepbrother, David Reed. A retired 30-year employee of the Haywood County School System, he worked at Tuscola High School as custodian and also served as a deputy with the Haywood County Sheriffs Department for traffic patrol at Tuscola. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, camping, fishing, and going to the beach. He is survived by two daughters, Kathy Lyle of Canton and Lisa Robinson of Waynesville; two sons, P. A. Hightower of Waynesville and Steve Hightower, and his wife, Tracy, of Weaverville; one sister, Mary Frances Moore, of Litha Springs, GA; one stepsister, Carolyn Stanley; one stepbrother, Willie Reed; thirteen grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2006 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Kenneth Rhinehart officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home and at other times, at the residence. Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Hightower, Tommy Manning, Thad Stevens, Chris Hart, Ed Chandler, Johnny Lee, and James Freeman.
