Thomas Reed Stevenson, age 79, passed peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late, T. Don and Oda Reed Stevenson. He was a graduate of Bethel High School and continued his education through N.C. State University sponsored by Champion Papers. He was owner of Stevenson's Electrical and Refrigeration Service for 40 years. Mr. Stevenson was baptized at Piney Grove United Methodist Church and was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church where he served as a vestry member and was a member of the Men's Fellowship. He was an avid gardener and loved flowers. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II aboard the USS Chaffee, a destroyer escort, serving in the American Campaign, Europe, Africa, the Asiatic Pacific, the Middle East and the Philippines. Mr. Stevenson received four Bronze Stars. In addition to his wife of 53 years, Patricia Harrison Stevenson, he is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Frady and her husband, Dennis of Canton and Jan Guthrie and her husband, Jim of Asheville; two sisters, Geraldine Hyde and Judy Limbo both of Canton; two brothers, Harry Stevenson of Asheville and Joe Bob Stevenson of Canton; three grandchildren, Tommy Smathers and Chris Davis of Canton and MAI (SW/AW) James E. Guthrie, USN and his wife, Jamie Lynn of Norfolk, VA; three great-grandchildren, Haley, Blake and Noah Guthrie and a special group of auction friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 2006 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church with the Reverend Tim McRee officiating and Reverend Dr. Russell Smith assisting. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens at 4:00 p.m. At other times, the family will be at the residence, 17 Royal Ridge, Clyde. Pallbearers will be Jim Matthews, Larry Beedee, Renford Warren, Max Moore, Marvin Collins and Bill O'Dell.
