Troy Erwin

June 12, 1920 — June 13, 2017

"Godly & Faithful Man" Canton – Troy Edwin Erwin, 97, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Thomas Edwin and Maggie Long Erwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Frady Erwin; and one brother, Harmon Erwin. Troy was a man who was very well-respected and admired. During his younger years, Troy found he had a talent in welding, was an accomplished machinist and mechanic, where he hand-made several tractors. His first job was operating machinery to help build the Blue Ridge Parkway where he aided in the blasting of the Craggy Tunnel. Troy was a United States Army veteran of World War II, and he fought in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. In 1983, he retired from Champion International where he worked for 37 years. Troy had a large network of friends that he met through operating his HAM radio and many camping outings to Standing Indian Campground. An avid gardener, Troy's vegetable garden was meticulously maintained and he enjoyed freezing the fruits of his labor and sharing it with his family and friends. A faithful and lifelong member of Riverside Baptist Church, Troy served as a deacon for many years. Troy will be remembered for his quick wit and being a godly and faithful servant. He is survived by two sons, Ed Erwin and Barbara Mays, of Canton and Michael Erwin and wife, Sandy, of Andrews; one sister, Grace Lane of Franklin; one brother, Paul Erwin and wife, Peggy, of Canton; Peggy Erwin, wife of Harmon Erwin; two grandchildren, Greg Erwin and wife, Derin, and Gracie Erwin; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017 at Riverside Baptist Church with the Reverend Steve Frasier and Reverend Dr. Mike Odom officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Riverside Baptist Church, 2171 Lake Logan Road, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to Gideon International/Card Program, through a local church.
