Clyde, Vardy Fugate, age 90, of Norfolk Drive, died on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at his residence. A native of Hazard, Kentucky, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ben C. and Nancy Collins Fugate and stepmother Emma Rhodes Fugate. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Georgia L. Fugate, who died in 2001; a son, Vardy Eugene "Gene" Fugate; one sister, Polly Fugate; four brothers, Ben Jr., Robert, Jack, and James "Perk" Fugate. When he was four years old, he came to Haywood County to live with his father and stepmother. He grew up and started working for Canton Hardwood where he retired as supervisor. Vardy was a member of Woodland Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, and many church board members have sought wisdom from him. He is survived by one son, Billy Jack "Bill" Fugate and his wife, Mary Ruth, of Clyde; one daughter, Edna Mae Fugate Robinson and her husband, David Reed, of Deland, FL; one sister, Opal Adams, of Clyde; 5 grandchildren, Randy Fugate and wife, Carrie, Todd Fugate and wife, Danielle, Neil Fugate and his wife, Trish, Jana Fugate and Gabe Burch; 13 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2008 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Alan Davis and Reverend Tim Pullin officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be deacons and men of Woodland Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home and at other times, at their home on 93 Norfolk Drive.
