Vaughn Scott

Waynesville, Vaughn Thompson Scott, 81, died May 21, 2014, following a courageous fight with pulmonary fibrosis. A Navy veteran and Waynesville resident, Vaughn was born in Alleghany County, PA on October 7, 1932. After graduating from high school in Columbus, OH, Vaughn enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for 20 years, retiring as a Senior Chief Quarter Master. He had tours of duty in many parts of the world, including Korea during the war. The highlight of his military service was the decade he spent in the Naval Submarine Service. Upon retirement he moved to Jacksonville, Fl, where he worked for 11years as a court reporter. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1976 from the University of North Florida and a Masters Degree in Social Work from Florida State University in 1987. Vaughn worked in Jacksonville, FL as a licensed clinical social worker in Community Mental Health, retiring from his social work career at the Family Service Center, Mayport, Fl in 1998. He and his beloved wife of 27 years, Patricia Pace, relocated to Waynesville, NC after Vaughn's retirement. Throughout his life, Vaughn was what his daughter Cindy Baker described as a true "Renaissance Man." He loved to skydive, scuba dive and passed ground school with the intent to take flying lessons. He tended his vegetable and flower gardens, and would lie in bed at night figuring out how to build things. He loved studying paleontology, politics, history, turning bowls on his lathe, making beveled glass windows and doors for restoring old homes, and volunteering at the local hospital. He and Patricia enjoyed traveling, and spent two weeks in France on summer touring galleries featuring Impressionist art. Vaughn was passionate about words, studying their origins and underlining thousands of entries in his dictionary. He also constantly listened to his beloved classical music. He is preceded in death by his father, Vaughn Thompson Scott, Sr., and his mother, Betty Jane Glass. He is survived by his wife Patricia; sister Betty Howard; five children, Cindy Baker, David Scott, Andrew Scott, Ted Scott and Robin Padgett, and five grandchildren, Lauren and Ryan Baker, Ashten Padgett, Andrew Noah and Eden Scott. A Celebration of Life service for Vaughn will be held at 11 a.m. June 14 at the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center, 91 North Lakeshore Drive, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745. The service will be in the Susan Todd Lounge in the Harrell Center. A reception will follow the Celebration.
