Velda Smathers

Velda Smith Smathers, age 77, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at her residence. A native of Macon County, she was a daughter of the late Fred Milton and Eula Vaughn Fouts Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Lawrence Smathers, who died in 1994. Velda lived most of her life in Canton but resided in Waynesville at this time. She was a member of Canton First Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Henry of Maggie Valley, Lisa Frizzell and her husband, Larry, of Clyde, and Laura Smathers of St. Charles, IL; one sister, Linda Raxter and her husband, Jerry, of Rock Hill, SC; four grandchildren, Luke, Logan, Carly, and Micah; and three great-grandchildren, Reese, Tyson, and Ramsey. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Jay Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Field Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
