Velma Mathis

September 3, 1922 — May 8, 2009

Velma Clontz Mathis, age 86, formerly of Lake View Drive, died, Friday, May 8, 2009, at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Larkin and Melissa Taylor Clontz. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Haskew, Birdie, Grady, and Albert Clontz; and two sisters, Hazel Henderson and Vernie Case. She retired from Crawford Nursing Home as a nurse's aide. She was a member of Center Pigeon Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Wilda Brown and Linda Messer and her husband, Lonnie; two sons, Charles Mathis and James Mathis and his wife, Rebecca, all of Canton; a sister, Sarah Andrews of Conyers, GA; ten grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2009, at Center Pigeon Baptist Church with the Reverend Alan Blanton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton and from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Saturday at Mountain View and Lake View Community Room, 30 Patrick Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Care Partners Hospice Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
