"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies." Proverbs 31:10 Asheville, For 83 years God blessed our family and friends with just such a woman in the life of Verna Brooks. Early Saturday morning God called her home to be with Him. Her desire is for every person whose life she touched to know that she loved them. She loved family, and most of all, she loved Jesus. She looks forward to the day she sees you again in Heaven. She was a native Gaston County and was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Bertha Pearl Howard Bryant. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Reverend Melvin Edward Brooks, two sisters and four brothers. Verna was a member of the Freedom Baptist Church in Asheville and enjoyed crocheting , needlework and reading. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Leeper and her husband, James, of Asheville and Kathy Ledford and her husband, Michael, of Barnardsville; two sons, Gary Brooks and his wife, Vanna, of Pfafftown and Reverend Terry Brooks and his wife, Kim, of Rutherfordton; two sisters, Edna Carroll of Gastonia and Barbara Bryant of Ponte Vedre, FL; two brothers, Thermond H. Bryant of Gastonia and Reverend Berl Bryant of Lowell; nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 25, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Freedom Baptist Church in Asheville with Reverend Keith Hutchinson and Reverend Everett Haney officiating. Burial will follow on Tuesday at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service on Monday evening at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be Brian Scoggins, Chris Leeper, Kyle Brooks, Kelsey Groce, Wesley Ledford and Roger Grebel.
