Verna Chapman

August 26, 1917 — January 15, 2009

Waynesville, Verna Medford Chapman, age 91 of Long Street, died Thursday, January 15, 2009 at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Avery Basil and Annie Williams Medford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Gordon Chapman who died in 1990; daughter, Shirley Lee Hawkins who died in 2006; four sisters and three brothers. She was a very loving mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. Verna was best known for her homemade biscuits and was loved by all who knew her. She is survived by one daughter, Blanche Evelyn Reeves; and a son, Gerald Anson Chapman both of Waynesville; one sister, Allie Jordan, of Robbinsville; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2009 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Phillip Wyatt offficating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. At other times the family will be at the son's residence. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
