Victor Dukes

Victor Morgan Dukes, 78 of Charleston SC, more recently of Maggie Valley, NC passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the Brian Center of Waynesville, NC. Rev. Dukes was born in St. George, SC on Sept. 28, 1930. He was a son of the late George Canaday Dukes and Eva Singletary Dukes. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Ann Challis who passed away in Sept. of 2008 in Richmond VA. He was also predeceased by sisters: Una Mae Campbell and Norma Tabor and a brother William Dukes Rev. Dukes is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie Dempsey Dukes, formerly of Charleston, SC, daughter Vicki Dubuke, her husband Larry and granddaughter Lauren of Maggie Valley, NC and a son, David and his wife Ana and grandson Justin of Erie, PA. He is also survived by two brothers: Clemon L. Dukes of Savannah, GA and Calvin R. Dukes of Asheville, NC and nieces and nephews. Rev. Dukes graduated from Mars Hill College, Furman University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was ordained in Charleston SC on Aug 21, 1955 by the Ashley River Baptist Church. He was Director of Religious Activities at Furman University, serving from 1958 to 1965. He pastored churched in SC, MD and Washington, DC. Rev Dukes last call to minister was at the Star Gospel Mission, Charleston, SC. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Star Gospel Mission, 474 Meetings Street, Charleston, SC. Visitation will be at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel on Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC at 1pm Wednesday, May 6, 2009. The funeral will follow at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel at 2pm with burial at Live Oak Cemetery, Charleston, SC.
