"Wonderful, Husband, Father & Grandfather" Canton – Virgil Lee Brown, age 89, passed away Tuesday, February 02, 2016 at Maggie Valley Nursing Home and Rehabilitation. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Oscar Lee and Sallie McCracken Brown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Brown, who died in 2006; a brother, Bill Brown; and a grandson, Jody Brown. Virgil was a United States World War II veteran and a member of North Canton Baptist Church. He enjoyed sports of all kinds and was an avid Atlanta Braves and UNC Chapel Hill fan. Virgil will be remembered for being devoted to his family and a loving, caring husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Novella Clark Brown; two daughters, Brenda Singleton and her husband, Neal, of Canton and Linda Craig and her husband, Gary, of Candler; one son, Kevin Brown and his wife, Angie, of Clyde; six grandchildren, Jason, Stephanie, Chad, Shane, Brandon, and Slade; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, Austin, Kristal, and Lilly; and three step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2016 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Mark Caldwell officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to North Canton Baptist Church, 735 North Canton Road, Canton, NC 28716.
