Virgil Chambers

September 25, 1925 — May 16, 2009

Canton-Virgil Hascue "Dick" Chambers, age 83, of 10053 Cruso Road went home to be with the Lord May 16, 2009. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, and was a son of the late O.C. "Pete" Chambers, Sr. and Etta Smathers Chambers. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Pless Phelps, Lucy June Vetitoe and Reba Chambers; two brothers, Bill Chambers and Frank Chambers. Dick was a World War II Veteran serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. During that time, he traveled and was a part of the Invasion of Normandy, Pearl Harbor, Wake Island and Okinawa before making it back home to the family who loved him so much. He attended Cruso School before being drafted into the Military. He retired from Champion Papers with 43 years of service. He is survived by two brothers, O.C. Chambers, Jr., of Cruso and Elwood Chambers, of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Bruce Cayton officiating.
