Waynesville, Virgil Monroe Mathews, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Hillard and Grace Trippett Mathews. He was also preceded in death by his wife's, Patsy Mathews and Barbara Cook Mathews; sister, Hilda Mathews; two brothers, Alvin and Carl Mathews. Virgil was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church. He proudly served in the United States Army and retired from Dayco Corporation. Virgil enjoyed trout fishing, hiking, mowing and spending time with his grandchildren. Virgil is survived by two daughters, Linda Russell (Phillip), of Canton and Tracie Phillips (Rodney), of Clyde; one son, William Mathews (Teana), of Morristown, Tennessee; two brothers, Harold Mathews, of Canton and Cecil Mathews, of Stapleton, Georgia; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Crabtree Baptist Church with Reverend Charles Dean officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 480 Crabtree Church Road, Clyde, NC 28721.
