Virginia Cordell Boone, age 97, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the Emerald Ridge Care Center. Virginia, a long-time resident of Canton and Asheville, was a daughter of the late Joseph and Martha Jones Cordell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Boone. Virginia was passionate about her family, her faith, gardening and her work in crafts. She excelled at making hand braided rugs and received many awards at state and regional fairs for her creations. She also taught her craft at both Haywood Community College and privately for more than forty years. In 2009, she was honored for her lifetime devotion to regional crafts at the dedication of the Virginia C. Boone Mountain Heritage Center in Fletcher. She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Don and Laura Boone of Asheville, Martin and Susie Boone of Santa Cruz, CA, Joe and Margie Boone of Weaverville, Jim and Nina Boone of Baton Rouge, LA, David and Lynn Boone of Canton and JoAnna and Allen Foegeding of Raleigh. Mamaw also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Virginia's life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Foster Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she was the oldest member. A private family burial will follow. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
