Virginia Sanford

Virginia Long Sanford, age 86, formerly of Charles Street died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at the Brian Center in Waynesville. She was born November 11, 1919 on top of Kings Mountain in the Webster Community of Jackson County and was the daughter of the late Clinton and Annie Allman Long. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Edward Sanford, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Sanford of Clyde, to whom she was married for 45 years until his death in 1990; two sisters, Etta and Betty Long, and a brother, Harry Long. She was a homemaker and a member of Woodland Baptist Church. She was a 1937 graduate of Webster High School where she was valedictorian; she also served in the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post #5198. Mrs. Sanford devoted her life to taking care of others and everyone who knew her loved her. When she lived on Charles Street in Clyde, she loved to exchange a friendly wave to those who passed by. She is survived by a son, Michael Arthur Sanford and his wife, Karen, of Bryson City; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Sarah Sanford of Bryson City, many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2006 at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Alan Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
