Virginia Smathers

Virginia Lee Zimmerman Smathers Canton – Virginia Lee Zimmerman Smathers, age 93, passed away on Friday, August 19, 2011, at John F. Keever, Jr., Solace Center. A native of Wheeling, West Virginia and a graduate of West Virginia University, Virginia was the daughter of the late William Henry, Jr., and Della June Inbody Zimmerman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sigmon Wayne Smathers; a brother, William Zimmerman; three sisters, Ada Elizabeth Frazier, Eliza Jane Stankus, and June Zimmerman. A United States Marine veteran of World War II, Virginia worked as a dietician at Norborn Hospital which is now Memorial Mission Hospital. She was a member of Canton Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Jane Smathers and Fritzie S. Wise and her husband, Tim, of Waynesville. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 21, 2011, at Morning Star Cemetery with the Reverend Esta Jarrett officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
