Canton - William Richard Davis, 72, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at Carolinas Healthcare System Cleveland in Shelby.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Gilbert and Eva Conner Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Massey Rogers; and close friends, Carroll Smith, Jake Howell, and Roger Hill. Richard was a United States Navy veteran having served during the Vietnam War and later was employed by Champion International/Blue Ridge for more than 40 years. Richard enjoyed his classic cars, going to car shows, and car racing.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Verda Ledbetter Davis, and one brother, Junior Davis, of Waynesville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 23, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Jeff King and Reverend Steve Frazier officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
