Candler-Walter Gilbert Leming, age 79, died at home on Saturday, August 11, 2007, after a brief illness. Born June 9, 1928 in Haywood County, he was a son of the late Rufus and Mabel Edwards Leming. Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Curtis Leming and his daughter, Linda Louise Leming. Walter was a retired lieutenant in the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. His posts included Andrews, Highlands, Sylva, Statesville, Morganton, Gastonia, Hendersonville, and Asheville. He was also a veteran of both WWII and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Alan Lane of Arlington, Virginia, a grandson and his wife, Colin and Adrienne Lane of Charlotte, and a granddaughter and her husband, Cara and Joseph Shrum of Portland, Oregon. Also surviving are Walt's sister, Mildred Cathey of Waynesville, his sister and brother-in-law Verna and Roy Burch of Asheville, his brother and sister-in-law Robert and Joyce Leming of Montrose, Virginia, and his sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Jack Farmer of Sylva. Walter is also survived by his loving companion and friend, Erma Woods of Candler. A service to celebrate Walt's life will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 14 at New Morgan Hill Baptist Church in Candler. The Rev. Roy Houston, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, also at the church. Walter will be missed by many, including his friends and co-workers of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, his church family at New Morgan Hill Baptist Church, and his numerous friends and wonderful neighbors.
