Clyde, Walter Lee Southerland, age 54, died on Tuesday, March 16, 2010. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James Perry Southerland and was also preceded in death by a brother, Jim Southerland. He was owner and operator of Walt's Trenching & Backhoe and was employed for the Town of Clyde for 19 years. Walter loved his horses and enjoyed riding and was known for his great sense of humor. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Ruth Bryson Southerland Justice and Jake Justice of Waynesville; his wife of 31 years, Patsy Phillips Southerland; one son, Jody Southerland, of Clyde; three sisters, Wilma Lemanek and her husband, Joe, of Waynesville, Margaret Kahley and her husband, Jim, of Ladson, South Carolina, Daisy Clark and her husband, Henry, of Waynesville, Hazel Herron of Candler, and Eva Putnam of Newport, Tennessee; four brothers, Carl Ray Southerland and his wife, Saralyn, of the Bethel Community, Bob Southerland and his wife, Joyce, of Clyde, Floyd Southerland and his wife, Teresa, of Waynesville, and Thomas Justice, Jr. and his wife, Shay, of Clyde; special brother-in-law, Billy Phillips; In-laws, Ed and Jeanette Phillips; special friend, Stewart Gaddis; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Anthony Greene officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
