Walter Caldwell

November 26, 1921 — September 27, 2014

Waynesville, Walter William Caldwell, age 92, of Shelton Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at his home. A native of Spring Creek in Madison County, he was the son of the late George Weaver and Ethel Viola Messer Caldwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma Keener, Maude Strickland, Edith Meadows and Jean Sutton; one brother, George Caldwell, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Garry Eavenson. Walter served in the CC camps in the Cataloochee Valley and always enjoyed going back to visit. He served honorably in the US Army as a sergeant during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. Walter returned to Waynesville and worked at the Dayco Corporation, retiring as a supervisor after more than 40 years. He served faithfully as a deacon and Sunday-School teacher at Barberville Baptist Church where he was a member. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. Walter never met a stranger and was well known for his sense of humor, often joking that his middle initial "W" stood for "Wonderful." Walter is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret Reeves Caldwell; a daughter, Peggy Caldwell Eavenson of Asheville; two sisters, Laura Price and Edna Caldwell; three brothers, Charles, Kim, and Ronnie Dale Caldwell; two grandchildren, Teresa Eavenson and her husband, Paul, and Benton Eavenson and his wife Kellie; and two great-grandchildren, Olivia Eavenson and Benton Caldwell Eavenson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Barberville Baptist Church with Reverend Kris Estep officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Gene Sizemore, Steve Atwood, Benton Eavenson, Chase Palmer, Glenn Meadows, Ronnie Dale Caldwell, Paul Glover, and Charles Caldwell. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the church. Memorials may be made to Barberville Baptist Church, 1441 Russ Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786.
