Walter Ervin Ward, age 81, of George's Branch Road, died on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at his residence. A native of Madison County, he was the son of Herman and Addie Buckner Ward. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Connie Wilde and Hazel Rice; and a brother, Raymond Ward. He was a 1949 graduate of Madison High School and a former employee of Champion International. Mr. Ward was a barber in Asheville from 1964 – 1996. He barbered at the Trailway Bus Station and Flat Iron Building. After retirement, he drove dealer transports for Matthews Ford, Jim Barkely Toyota, and Ken Wilson Ford. He was a long time member and deacon of Ridgeway Baptist Church and currently deacon emeritus, Sunday School teacher, Royal Ambassador leader, and member of VFW Post #9939 in Candler. He was a United States Army veteran serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Muse Ward; two sons, Roger E. Ward and his wife, Susan, of Pinehurst; and Weldon R. Ward and his wife, Treva, of Easley, SC; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Ward, Alyssa Howard, and Elizabeth Ward. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
