Walter Wells

October 30, 1932 — May 16, 2010

Walter M. Wells, age 77, died on Sunday May 16, 2010, at Mission Hospital – Memorial Campus. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James Millard "Bill" and Florence Hargrove Wells. He was also preceded in death by a son, Walter Eric Wells who died in 2000. He was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church. Walter and his wife were the owners and operators of Pisgah Clothing Care Center and the former owners and operators of Han-Dee Stop, Inc., Pro-Mart Hardware, and Clyde Laundromat. He was a member of the Pigeon River Masonic Lodge AF&AM #386 and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, American Legion Post #61; the McDonald's coffee club, and a former member of the Pigeon Valley Lions Club. He was a United States Navy veteran. Walter's special interests included yard work, tending rose bushes, restoring classic Thunderbirds, and he loved being a grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Dorotha Gidney Wells; a daughter, Lynne Meyer and her husband, Daniel, and two grandchildren, Eric and Matthew Meyer of Canton; two sisters, Mary Hipps of Asheville and Anna Lee Brown of Canton; two brothers, Joe Wells of Canton and William Burton Wells and his wife, Pat, of Chapin, SC; a brother-in-law, Charles Gidney of Asheville; two sisters-in-law, Frances Hannah and her husband, Charles, of Clyde and Margaret Terrell and her husband, Bill, of Canton; and several special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Canton Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Christy officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Canton Central United Methodist Church Building Campaign Fund, 34 Church Street, Canton, NC 28716.
