Canton-Walter F. "Walt" Zachary, age 88, formerly of Johnson Drive died Monday, January 10, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Edward Zachary and Elsie "Cricket" Bryson Zachary Hargrove and step-father L. H. "Deacon" Hargrove. He was the husband of the late Wilhemine Hively Zachary who died in 1996. He attended Mars Hill College. Walt was a former employee of American Enka with 19 years of service and later retired from Champion International Paper Company with 24 years of service. He was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent for a number of years and was a member and Past Master of the Pigeon River Masonic Lodge #386 AF & AM. He was a United States Army veteran serving in Asia. He is survived by one daughter Leanna Kilpatrick and her husband Ross of Waynesville and one son Eric Zachary and his wife Nancy of Weaverville, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-granddaughters. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. Reverend Carrol Lindsey will officiate. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road with Masonic graveside rites conducted by Pigeon River Lodge #386 AF & AM. The lodge will open at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home prior to the service.
