Weldon Lawrence Goolsby, age 83, of Mitchell Street died on Friday, December 9, 2011, at MedWest Haywood. A native of Rockbridge County, VA, he was the son of the late Lawrence 'Pop" and Ruby Wiseman Goolsby. He retired from Champion International in 1995 with 43 years of service and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canton. Weldon served as treasurer for Snug Harbor, Champion Paper Retirees. He was an avid baseball fan following the Atlanta Braves, Asheville Tourists, and the New York Yankees of yesteryear. Weldon enjoyed television, especially western movies and fishing. In Weldon's life there was nothing more important than his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and community servant. He was a United States Army serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Aza Lea Farley Goolsby, a daughter, Anita Goolsby of Asheville; two sons, Bill Goolsby and his wife, Pam, of Mills River and Andy Goolsby and his wife, Melanie, of Canton; a sister, Madeline Hyatt of Canton; five grandchildren, Anna Goolsby, Drew Evans, Ansley Goolsby, Brady Goolsby, and Shannon Tate; and two great-grandchildren, Mason and Gracie Tate. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 12, 2011, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Dustin D. James, Reverend Donnie Henson, and Reverend Clay Morgan officiating. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
