Wilburn Nelson

December 24, 1917 — July 2, 2004

Maggie Valley-Wilburn Benjamin Nelson, age 86, of High Hill Drive, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at his residence. He was a native of Haywood County and was the son of the late Dave and Lura Conard Nelson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Leila Rich Nelson, who died in 1998; and by six brothers and five sisters. He was a retired foreman with the US Park Service with over 20 years of service. He was an Army veteran having served during WWII. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He is survived by his son, Reverend Jerry Nelson and his wife, Elizabeth of Maggie Valley; two daughters, Shirley N. Reece and her husband, Dan of Canton, and Linda Gail McConnell of Maggie Valley; a brother, Sidney Nelson of Clementon, New Jersey; a sister, Lola Sutton of Patterson, NC; 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 5, 2004 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. The Reverend Ted Reeves and Reverend Barry Clark will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004 at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence. The grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers will be I. C. Sutton, Ned Jones, Robert Moody, Charles Cagle, Claude Trantham, and Marvin Murhead. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
