Waynesville, William Patton "Bill" Burgin, age 82, died on Monday, August 3, 2009 at Haywood Regional Medical Center in the presence of his loving family. He was the son of the late William Hurst Burgin and Beulah Haynes Burgin of Haywood County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Griffin and Patricia Green. Bill grew up on Dellwood Road and attended school in Waynesville, graduating from Waynesville Township High School, in the 1944 class. Soon after graduation, he joined the US Marine Corps, serving on Guam during World War II and was honorably discharged in July of 1946. Bill returned to Waynesville where he attended Blanton's Business College graduating with an Associate Degree in Business. He was associated with his father in business at Burgin's Department Store in Frog Level from the time he was a young teenager until the business sold in the early 1970's. He was a developer and building contractor until his death. Bill was a lifelong member of Waynesville First Baptist Church, where he served on several committees, worked with his mother, Beulah Burgin, in the pre-school and taught Fourth Grade Boys Sunday School. His civic memberships included serving as a Director of Western Carolina Bank in the late 1970's, then as a Director of Haywood Savings Bank for 20 years, serving as Board Chairman for 5 of those 20 years. He also served as Director of the Haywood County Erosion Control Board. He was a past member/president of Waynesville JC's and a past member of the Waynesville Lion's Club. He was a member of the Waynesville Country Club and Laurel Ridge Country Club. He was a devoted husband and the best Daddy and Granddaddy anyone could ever want. He will be greatly missed but remembered for his humor and laughter that he passed onto his family and friends. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Fran Howell Burgin, his four children, Pam Powlas and her husband, Tom, of Hendersonville, Patt Burgin of Waynesville, Camille Posey and her husband, Steve, of Pelham, AL, and John Burgin and his wife, Anita, of Waynesville; and three sisters, Ruth Worsham and Alice McCann both of Waynesville and Becky Glance of Ormond Beach, FL; one brother, Charles Burgin of Waynesville; and a brother-in-law, Emmitt Green of Waynesville. He delighted in his seven grandchildren, Glenn Powlas and his wife, Meagan, of Durham, NC, Brian Powlas of Asheville, NC, Stacey Burgin of Memphis, TN, Will Burgin of Waynesville, Laura Posey, of Pellam, AL, and Meredith and Julianne Burgin of Waynesville; and one great grandchild, Henry Grey Powlas. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2009 in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince and Reverend Dr. Dick Maples officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Glenn and Brian Powlas, Marty Griffin, Will Burgin, Scott Burgin, Mike and Bruce Norman, Mike McCann, and Lawrence Green. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
