Waynesville, William Grady "Charles" Coward, Jr., age 70, of 66 Pine Drive, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at his residence. A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late William Grady Coward and Nola Suttles Coward. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Price Coward, who died in 1997 and two sisters, Lucille Justice and Wanda Ferguson. He was a US Army veteran. He was owner/operator for 40 years of the Kentucky Fried Chicken and Blimpie Subs in Waynesville and was a member of Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church. He is survived by two sons, Charles Roger Coward and his wife, Kelly, of Canton and Keith Wayne Coward and his wife, Cindy, of Clyde; a daughter, Amy Coward Hiestand and her husband, Brian, of New York City, New York; three sisters, Maude Fisher and her husband, Daniel, of Waynesville, Brenda Briggs of Mars Hill, and Patty Coward of Spring Creek; one brother, Dean Coward, and his wife, Darlene, of Lawrenceville, Georgia; five grandchildren, Brooke, Brian, Lindsey, Luke, and Jesse Coward; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend J. Jones and Reverend Jack James officiating. Entombment will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Lung Association, 3801 Lake Boone Trail, Ste. 190, Raleigh, NC 27607 and Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
