Waynesville, William "Sody" Grahl, age 75, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Memorial Mission Hospital from complications of congestive heart failure. A native and lifelong residence of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Carroll Lynwood and Geneva Ferguson Grahl and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Philmon and Martha Ann Mehaffey. Sody was a US Army veteran who served during the end of the Korean Conflict. A graduate of Waynesville Township High School, he attended college at UNC Chapel Hill. He retired from BASF where he worked as a maintenance technician. Sody loved his granddaughters and enjoyed being outdoors and walking around the lake with his friends. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and watching his beloved Tarheels. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jane L. Grahl; one son, Scott Grahl of Waynesville; a daughter Kim G. McAbee and her husband, Mike, of Franklin, Kentucky; one brother, Dr. Carroll Grahl and his wife, Shirley, of Brevard; three granddaughters, Sara, Emily, and Natalie McAbee of Franklin, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 31, 2011 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Patrick Womack officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews, Chris Mehaffey, Justin and Steven James, Clay and Clint Tatham, and lifelong and childhood friend, Stanley Turner. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
