William Green

March 28, 1916 — February 12, 2005

William A. Green, age 88, of Canton passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 12, 2005 at Autumn Care Nursing Home following a extended period of declining health. He resided in Haywood County most of his life and was the son of the late Jesse and Maude McCreary Green. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Green and three sisters, Jenny Dotson, Bula Carver, and Martha Lyle. He retired from Champion International with 40 years of service. He was a member of Sunny Point Baptist Church and a past member of North Canton Baptist Church and East Waynesville Baptist Church where he served in various leadership capacities. He was an ordained deacon. He was educated in Haywood County Schools and graduated from Clyde High School. Mr. Green had a lifelong love of farming and always kept several "pet" cattle. He was well known in his community for his passion of harmonica music and was always ready to give concerts whenever he found a captive audience. He enjoyed camping and traveling during his retirement years. In addition to his wife of 52 years, Virgie Carver Green, he is survived by a daughter, Frances Carter and her husband, Dan of Augusta, MT; two sons, Ron Michael Green and his wife, Sheila and their children Aaron Michael, Emily June and Jared Michael of Canton and Dr. Charles W. Green and his wife, Jean of Winston-Salem; a step-daughter, Gail S. Lovingood and her husband, Troy of Landrum, SC; a step-son, Larry K. Swanger of Greenville, TN; a sister, Louise Harrison of Fletcher and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend James Roberts and Ron Green officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his son, Ron Green, 419 Mountain Spring Lane, Canton. Pallbearers will be Jim Ray, Earl Hannah, George Hardin, David Earley, Edward Miller, Bruce Singleton, Donald Hensley and Troy Lovingood. Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Michael Green and Jared Michael Green. Memorials may be made to Sunny Point Baptist Church, 132 Sunny Point Drive, Canton, NC 28716.
