William Hudson

January 29, 1933 — October 26, 2012

Waynesville, William Ashby Hudson, 79, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, October 26, 2012. A native of Florence, South Carolina, he lived most of his life in Tampa, Florida, and the past 12 years in Waynesville. He was the son of the late Oscar Dennis (Jack) and Irene Swann Hudson and was also preceded in death by a sister, Linda Genine Drawdy. Bill was a Sergeant in the US Air Force, serving in Germany as a teletype operator and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was a retired accountant from the Hillsborough County Clerk of the Circuit Court in Tampa, Florida. Bill loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, working in his garden, and riding his tractor. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially football and rooting for the USC gamecocks. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and was an active member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Doris Gilbertson Hudson; four daughters, Sheila Ann Kazar (Catherine) of Slippery Rock, PA, Sheryl Lyn Freed of Tampa, FL, Stacey Renee Van Voorhis (Kevin) of Taylorsville, NC, and Sonya Marie Hudson of Tampa, FL; one brother, Oscar Dennis Jr. (Jack) Hudson (Jo) of Toledo, OH; five grandchildren, Kayla, Jordan, Luke, Sarah, and Anna; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Charles Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 10000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148; Open Door Ministries, 32 Commerce Street, Waynesville, NC 28786; or Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 459, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745.
