William Laycock

The Reverend William A. "Bill" Laycock passed to his Heavenly Home on January 12, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn Meadows Laycock; son, William A. Laycock, Jr. and wife Sandy; three grandchildren, W. David Laycock and wife, Julie Anne, Emily Laycock, Michael Laycock, and a host of friends. Reverend Laycock attended Hiwassee College and was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He was a member of Holston Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church for 58 years, having served the Madisonville Circuit, the Pittman Center Charge, and as Town & Country Professor at Hiwassee College where he was designated a Professor Emeritus. Reverend Laycock was a leader in the Christian Ashram movement and the Grand Chaplain of the Masonic Order for the state of Tennessee. For his outstanding work with rural pastors, many beginning their ministry, he received the Holston Conference Town & Country Award. In retirement, Reverend Laycock assisted his wife in the Lay Ministry Center at Lake Junaluska. In this 10-year tenure (and several years following), he traveled many miles, made many friends, and shared his vibrant faith. A Service of Celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Charles Wilson, Reverend W. David Laycock, Reverend Dr. Gordan Goodgame, and Bishop Richard Looney officiating. Interment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will include the grandchildren, the Reverend David & Julie Anne Laycock, Emily Laycock and Chris Cowan (fiancée), Michael Laycock, Drew Kirkpatrick, J.H. Williams, and Bob West. The family will receive friends from Noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
