William Mcelroy

Waynesville, William Louis McElroy, age 76, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013 at MedWest-Haywood Hospital. He was born on July 7, 1937 in Savannah, Georgia and was the son of the late Paul and Josephine Medford McElroy. Bill was preceded in death by a son, William Baine McElroy, who passed away in 1994; one brother, Paul McElroy, Jr.; and two loving in-laws, John and Louise Penny. Bill was an insurance executive for 45 years and when he was not working, you could find him fishing the outer banks and streams of Western North Carolina or gardening. He also enjoyed listening to gospel, bluegrass and jazz music. Bill also loved to travel and spend time with his friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, JoAnne Penny McElroy of Waynesville; one son, Calvin "Cal" McElroy, of Riverview, Florida; one sister, Myrna Campbell and her husband, Jim, of Waynesville; one sister-in-law, Terri Matthews and her husband, Rabun, of St. Simons Island, Georgia; and several nieces. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
