Waynesville, William Long "Bill" Metts, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015. Bill was born on February 15, 1937 in Ehrhardt, South Carolina to the late H.M. and Jane Long Metts. Bill was raised in Charleston, South Carolina and spent his late teens and early 20's in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bill honorably served as Airman Second Class in the regular US Air Force for four years and an additional four years in inactive reserve. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and as a member of the 1009th Special Weapons Squadron was eligible to wear the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He served in San Antonio, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Alice Springs, Australia; and Laramie (Pole Mountain), Wyoming. In more recent years, his squadron became known as Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC). He attended N.C. State University, Clemson University and graduated from Kings College in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bill worked with Dinkler Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia and Lexington, Kentucky and Spangler Corporation in Charlotte, North Carolina. He moved to Waynesville in 1969 and spent 30+ years as an independent insurance agent and realtor with the L.N. Davis Company, retiring in 1999. Bill was president of the Haywood County Board of Realtors in 1973. Bill was a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church and faithfully served as a deacon in the church during the 70's and 80's. He enjoyed working along with his wife, Carolyn, for several years as a volunteer with Haywood County Meals-on-Wheels. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Alan Davis Metts, who died in 1997. Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn; sister-in-law, Kathy Davis Lance and husband, Gary; brother-in-law, Dr. Paul L. Davis, Jr. and wife, Karon; nephew, Dr. Paul L. Davis, III and wife, Jessie; nieces, Susanna Meyer and husband, Scot, Catherine Davis and husband, Carlo Borghi, Vanessa Davis-Cohen and husband, Brian, and Kathleen Merritt Lance; an aunt, Jewell Evans; and one cousin, Billy Ingram and wife, Katherine, and their son, Sean. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Hazelwood Presbyterian Church with Reverend Patrick Womack and Reverend Larry Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until service time in the fellowship hall of the church and at other times at the Metts residence.
