William Robinson

March 11, 1922 — December 17, 2015

"In Loving Memory" Winston – Salem, William G. (Bill) Robinson, 93 passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday evening, December 17, 2015 at the Sticht Center for Aging at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Georgia M. and Jerry G. Robinson. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Palmer Robinson, a daughter Sandra and her husband Jack and 3 beloved grand dogs Emma, Ellie and Blue. Bill played mandolin in his own bluegrass band in high school and the band won a talent contest sponsored by WWNC. In 1939 after graduating from Clyde High School Bill moved to New York City where he spent his weeks working at Ford Instrument Company as a machinist and his weekends enjoying the city and Coney Island. In 1943 he was drafted to into the Army/Air Force to defend his country in WWII. He proudly served as an electrical mechanic for B-29 bombers. He was stationed at locations across the US and was on Guam when the war ended in 1945. After the war he went to work for Champion International and completed his degree at the then Asheville Buncombe College in 1954. He retired from Champion in 1987 after 35 yrs of service as a pipefitter. In his retirement and earlier he enjoyed Carolyn's cooking, Hardee's biscuits, driving his Ford cars and trucks, dogs and cats, bird watching, hunting, bluegrass music, gardening, tending his cattle, tinkering with his cars, buying and selling antiques, reading anything by his favorite author Carl Sagan, and living simply. He and his quick wit and intuitive insight will be very much missed by all who knew him. A celebration of life service for Bill will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2015 in the Wells Events Center in Waynesville, NC. Visitation and reminiscence with the family will follow the service at the Events Center. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Marcella, Lilly, Amirah and Jaqueline for providing loving care to Mr. Bill in his last days as well as Dr. Franklin Watkins and Dr. Richard Taylor and the nurses who so lovingly cared for him at the Sticht Center. Due to Bill's deep love of nature and animals, the family requests that memorials be made to Project Pearl Animal Welfare Organization (www.projectpearlnc.org) at PO Box 25044 Winston-Salem, NC 27114-5044.
