William Shope

December 31, 1923 — July 15, 2007

William Calvin Shope, age 83, of Candler, departed this earthly home to enter his heavenly home on Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. He was a native of Haywood County and lived most of his life in Buncombe County. He was the son of the late Garrett Hobert and Bertha Miller Shope and was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence "Pete" Shope and Reverend G.H. Shope; and two sisters, Hazel Young and Mabel Hooker. Calvin was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church where he had served as deacon, R.A. leader, Brotherhood President, choir member, Extension leader and adult men's Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Upper Hominy and served as chaplain. He retired from Champion International in 1987 with 42 years of service. He was a US Army veteran serving in the Philippines and New Guinea. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Genevieve Lance Shope; three daughters, Carolyn Stamey and her husband, Gerald, of Candler, Sheila King and her husband, Leslie, of Candler and Donna Fowler and her husband, Steve, of Canton; two sons, Larry Shope and his wife, Becky, of Candler and Darryl Shope and his wife, Susan, of Mooresville; 11 grandchildren, Michael and Bridgett Stamey of Candler, David and Nancy Stamey of Candler, Lorrie and Jim Greene of Raleigh, Toni Shope of Cornelius, Shannon Shope of Sylva, Kristen Fowler of Teachy, NC, Geoffrey Fowler of Canton, Hannah Hayden and Ethan Shope of Candler and Jennifer King of Candler; three great-grandchildren, Matthew and Zachary Greene of Raleigh and Ava Grace Stamey of Candler; two sisters, Mary Sue Belcher of Candler and Ruth Shope of Michigan; three brothers, Robert, James "Red" and David Shope, all of Candler Calvin was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He loved his family and will be greatly missed by all of us. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins, Reverend R.H. "Bud" Lance and Mr. Michael Stamey officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2007, at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Michael and David Stamey, Geoff Fowler, Ethan Shope, Jim Greene and also Steve Morgan. Calvin requested memorials be made to the Baptist Men of Ridgeway in care of Michael Stamey, Habitat for Humanity, 122 South Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786, or the Alzheimer's Disease Association, 31 College Place, Ste D320, Asheville, NC 28801-2644. A special thanks for the excellent care provided by the staff and doctors of Pisgah Manor in Candler.
