William Thomas "Bill" Whittle, 81, of 44 Fairway Hills Drive, died Saturday, August 3, 2013, at MedWest –Haywood Hospice Center. He was born in Elko, Virginia, on March 14, 1932, and had been a resident of Haywood County for seventeen years. Bill's passion in life was his faith and his family. He was a US Navy veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He retired in 1997 as a clergy with The Salvation Army with 43 years of service and the rank of Major. His love for meeting people led him to Lake Junaluska where he was a trolley driver. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ethel Mae Klaas Whittle, who died in 2000; his parents, William Whittle of Waltham, Massachusetts and Sylvia Luella Umber Whittle of Vici in Oklahoma Territory; a brother, James Whittle, of Fairfax, Virginia; and a grandson, Joshua Ray Grider. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Satterlee and her husband, Mark, of Huntsville, Alabama, Evelyn Tidman and her husband, Mark, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Cheryl Grider and her husband, Tim, of Lubbock, Texas; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at The Salvation Army Chapel, 750 Haywood Road, Asheville. Capt. Brett Cundiff will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at The Salvation Army prior to the service. Graveside committal service will be in Westview Cemetery of Atlanta on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
