Willus Lay

March 30, 1941 — May 1, 2010

Waynesville, Willus Lee Lay, age 69, of 427 Georgia Avenue, passed away on Saturday, May 01, 2010 at the John Keever Solice Center in Asheville. A native of Jackson County, he had lived most of his life in Haywood County and was the son of the late Lester and Estella Worley Lay. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Jerry; three sisters, Bessie Mae Harris, Ida Jean Frazier, and Donna Leigh. He was an employee of the Haywood County Government and retired in 2000. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Sylva. He is survived by three sons, Tyrone Leigh of Petersburg, West Virginia, and Alonzo Gibbs and Virgil Clark, both of Waynesville; a daughter, Wendy Clark, of Waynesville; three sisters, Barbara Ann Cason and her husband, Herbert, of Greenville, South Carolina, Shirley Jackson and her husband, Clyde, and Catherine McKinney of Waynesville; three brothers, William Leigh and his wife, Alice, of Columbus, Ohio, Else Leigh and his wife, Lula Bell, Waynesville, Geary Leigh and his wife, Edith, of Augusta, Georgia; and three grandchildren, Rashaad and Amaand McGahee and Janiqua Leigh. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Walter "Stevie" Bryson and Reverend Cleveland Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
