Winifred Garren

Winifred M. (Penny) Garren, age 86, of the Justice Ridge Road Community, passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at her residence. A native of Haywood County and a resident of Buncombe County since 1955, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Annie Smathers Morgan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard "Bud" Garren, who died in 1989, and a son, Charles Lloyd Garren. Penny was an accredited piano teacher with Sherwood Music School of Chicago, IL and a graduate of Fletcher School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse with Haywood Regional Medical Center and was a member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, James Howard Garren, Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Rutherfordton; one daughter, Sunny Williams and her husband, Neil, of Lancaster, SC; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Starnes Cove Baptist Church with the Reverend Charles Sams officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of the arrangements.
